Young Simba

This collection of poems have been inspired by the recent H&M U.K. kids clothing collection. To summarize, the company had used a young black boy to model a hoodie that had the word “monkey” printed on it, this without question enraged a vast majority of people and the growing anger towards the company has increased, this anger has also been reported to have been displayed towards the mother of this young boy as the community do not believe she had made the best choice in allowing the company use her son’s image. I do, personally, believe that the people acknowledge that in the simplest way to look at the situation the boy is doing his job and modelling a normal hoodie. However, nothing in life is just simple and nothing in life can be classified as it just being ‘the way things are’; to my own understanding the community would have preferred the company to have not used ‘one of ours’ to model that hoodie due to the negative connotation associated with the word. Not to mention the lack of progress that has been in the world; as sad as the situation is the current retaliation that the community has displayed in South Africa has ignited debate within the people. With some believing that their actions were somewhat representative of the feeling of the community across the world, while others advocating that their actions only bring to light the negative connotation surrounding the word.

“I believe that there will ultimately be a clash between the oppressed and those that do the oppressing. I believe that there will be a clash between those who want freedom, justice and equality for everyone and those who want to continue the systems of exploitation.” — Malcolm X
